Watch maintenance at GASSAN

  • Watches also need maintenance. A mechanical timepiece is a mechanical precision instrument that consists of hundreds of movable parts. These parts move continuously for years, the parts will wear out over time in the timepiece.
  • We recommend servicing your watch once every three to five years. Timely maintenance is important. The oil with which the rotating parts of your watch move, will age over time, dry out and lose its lubricating effect.
  • If you find that your watch is behind or in front, this is often an indication that the timepiece of your watch shows signs of wear. In this case, we advise you to submit your watch for repair as soon as possible. Waiting longer can lead to extra wear in the timepiece and therefore several timepiece parts will have to be replaced.
  • For maintenance and repair, we will in most cases send your watch to the aftersales of the relevant brand.

If in doubt, you can always contact the Central Service Center and visit one of our branches with your watch.

Tips: Maintain your watch yourself

  • Never open the movement yourself, leave this to the official dealer.
  • Always rinse your watch with fresh water after swimming (sea water / chlorinated water).
  • Always keep the crown closed. If it is open, moisture and dirt can get into the timepiece.
  • Never leave the watch in an environment with a heat source or in direct sunlight.
  • Do not expose the watch to extreme temperature differences.
  • Avoid contact with chemical products.
  • Try to avoid strong impacts and shocks.
  • Do not expose the watch to magnetic fields
  • Operate the watch as described in the description that you received when you purchased your watch.

Watch bands

A watch is not complete without a nice watch strap. If you want to enjoy it for a long time, it is important to choose a good quality watch strap and to use it sparingly. The quality of the watch straps varies by brand.

Maintenance

Every watch strap is subject to wear. How quickly a strap wears depends on the intensity with which you wear the watch.

General tips to extend the life of your watch band

  • Avoid contact with water when wearing a watch with a leather strap. Showering or swimming is at the expense of the quality of the leather strap.
  • Do not expose your watch band to bright sunlight as much as possible. This is to prevent dehydration and discoloration.
  • Never clean your watch band with soap, detergent or other (aggressive) cleaning products

Material types
Watch straps are available in different materials.

  • Leather à croco, calf, alligator, ostrich, buffalo, snakeskin etc.
  • Nylon
  • Velcrow
  • Rubber
  • Steel
  • Precious metal
  •  Titanium

However, each type of material has a number of specific properties that you must take into account.

Leather watch straps
Leather belts are sensitive to water, liquids and perspiration.

Rubber watch bands
Rubber watch bands have a high wearing comfort thanks to the flexible material. They are excellent for sports and easy to clean with some water. An exception are white rubber tires, which can turn yellow / green.

Solid steel watch straps
Massief stalen horlogebanden zijn zeer sterk en duurzaam. Ze zijn nikkelvrij en dus geschikt voor mensen met nikkelallergie.

Titanium watch bands
Titanium watch bands are distinguished by their silver-gray color and light weight. These types of watch straps are many times lighter than solid steel straps. This improves wearing comfort. Titanium is nickel free and therefore suitable for people with nickel allergy.

Nylon watch straps
Nylon is a strong material that is resistant to water.

Closures
Usually 3 types of closures are available. A folding clasp, a buckle and a butterfly clasp. Most watch straps have a folding clasp. The advantage of a folding clasp is that you only need to set the size of your watch band once. Then slide the watch around your wrist and simply click the clasp into place. Leather belts with a folding clasp therefore wear less quickly than leather belts with a buckle closure. A butterfly clasp is a double folding clasp. This luxury clasp is often used with exclusive or classic watches in the higher price ranges
